Had Vincent Van Gogh been born in China, perhaps this version of The Starry Night would have become the version we are all familiar with today. Although contrasting in terms of technique and colour palette, both paintings are eerie and suggest an ominous mood.
Greyscale removes the distraction colour sometimes has and allows viewers to focus on the stroke work and hidden details. The swirls in sky are not a breeze but a storm, rocking the trees violently in the skyline, close to their breaking point. Towards the bottom of the painting, black objects look out into the horizon. Are they trees? Or could they be people? Something wicked this way comes.
